Afterimage, 2012, animated film, 16 min

An afterimage is an optical illusion that refers to an image continuing to appear in one’s vision after exposure to the original image has ceased.

This work by Ronan Devlin with an accompanying original soundtrack by David J. Knowles is intended to be shown on a large scale to create a meditative space.

Each frame of the work is patterned on an identical two-dimensional grid. Transitions between frames are fluid and transfigurative to give the appearance of breaking the grid’s inherent rigidity and to create the optical illusion of an expansive three-dimensional space.
